Shelter Island, located in the Point Loma neighborhood, is a picturesque area west of downtown San Diego. With yacht clubs, restaurants, and a scenic waterfront park known as Shoreline Park, it’s a must-visit destination for travelers seeking coastal charm. Arrival and Check-In at Kona Kai Resort

Our journey to Shelter Island coincided with a holiday weekend, adding an unexpected twist to our adventure. Upon arrival, we were met with bustling crowds, drawn perhaps by a nearby presidential rally. Despite the lively atmosphere, we were eager to unwind at relax at Kona Kai Resort. After parking the car with the valet, we entered the lovely entrance area of the resort.

Kona Kai Resort Lunchtime Dilemma and Downtown San Diego Excursion

Arriving before our check-in time of 4 PM, we left Shelter Island and explored downtown San Diego while awaiting our room. Despite our initial plan to dine at Kona Kai’s onsite restaurant, a lengthy wait prompted us to seek lunch elsewhere.

Downtown San Diego, located about 15 minutes from Shelter Island, offers a variety of restaurants. Visitors are spoiled for choice, with options ranging from trendy bistros to fine dining establishments. The Gas Lamp area of downtown is a great place to explore.

Room Disappointment and Kona Kai Resort Exploration

We encountered disappointment upon returning to Kona Kai Resort and checking into our junior suite, which was promised a marina view and a higher floor. Technically, the picture below shows a Marina view, but we didn’t get to the higher floor. The room’s balcony offered a less-than-stellar vista of the backside, with minimal sight of the marina. Additionally, the bathroom didn’t align with the booking description, dampening our initial excitement.

Undeterred, we ventured out to explore the resort’s amenities. There are ample opportunities for relaxation, from two pools overlooking the marina to fire pits and cabanas. We could not find pool spots; this was not the resort’s fault, and we found other things to do. While beach access was absent on the marina side, the resort offered walking paths, a gym, and various sports rentals for guests.

Paddle Boarding

Eager to make the most of our time, we indulged in a family paddleboarding excursion along the marina. The serene waters provided the perfect backdrop for a memorable family activity, and we enjoyed seeing all the boats docked in the Marina.

Vessel Restaurant: On-Site Kona Kai Restaurant

As evening descended on Shelter Island, we savored a delightful dinner at Vessel, Kona Kai Resort’s on-site restaurant. With a picturesque marina view from our patio table, we relished good food and warm hospitality despite our earlier room frustrations. My husband had the Kona Kai burger, seen below. We do recommend this restaurant. Food will not disappoint, and the view is amazing. Ask for a table on the patio if weather permits.

Final Thoughts and Future Considerations

Reflecting on our stay on Shelter Island, we acknowledged that while Kona Kai Resort offered moments of enjoyment, the room discrepancy left a bittersweet impression. Despite a partial refund of resort fees, we departed with mixed feelings. However, we remain open to returning during a less chaotic time, hopeful for a smoother experience and the promised accommodations.
