Tournament of Roses Parade
This magnificent 2-hour parade takes place every year on January 1. Take the family to grab a spot on the 5.5-mile route, watch the parade for free, or purchase tickets to sit in the grandstands. There are also opportunities to work on some of the floats prior to parade day, which makes for a nice afternoon family day and volunteering with others.
If your family is daring, you could try sleeping on the parade route, which is perfectly legal. I suggest camping out only if you have teens because little ones likely won’t find it fun, and it can get very cold at night. You will find a ton of people sleeping on the sidewalks along the route, and the atmosphere is quite fun and family-friendly. Rose Bowl Football Game
The annual college football game at the Rose Bowl Stadium is part of the New Year’s celebration in Pasadena. If the family is into football, this is a must-do. You can find tickets to the game here. However, tickets can be pricey, so if seeing the game is not feasible, consider hanging out outside and tailgating with the others. It can be quite lively!
Kids Space Museum
You will find the Kids Space Museum next to the Rose Bowl Stadium. This place will surely entertain kids with interactive exhibits and engaging experiences. I would suggest this museum for kids 10 and under. If you have teens, send them to play in the green space in the park. They will have fun running around or playing soccer on one of the fields. The museum has a cafe for snacks, but there is limited food outside the museum.

Pasadena Metro Gold Line to Olvera Street
The Pasadena Metro Gold Line will take you on a 20-minute ride to downtown Los Angeles. There, you can spend the day on one of the oldest streets in Los Angeles, Olvera Street, and learn all about the historic Mexican pedestrian street in Los Angeles. There are many authentic restaurants to choose from. Our favorite is the family-friendly Las Anitas.

Eaton Canyon Hike
Grab a sandwich from Roma Italian Deli and plenty of water and head to a hike in Eaton Canyon. Dog’s are allowed if they are leashed. Depending on how far your family can walk, explore the trails and head down to the waterfall below or up the mountain to get a beautiful view of Los Angeles.
Eaton Canyon can get very crowded on the weekends. Parking is along Altadena Drive, but I suggest parking where the locals go, Pinecrest Drive and Crescent in Altadena. You will find much more parking here, and the view from walking into the canyon is breathtaking!
Vintage Shopping South Pasadena
If you have a teen who wants to scope out the vintage shopping situation in Pasadena, send them down to Mission Street in South Pasadena. There are several noteworthy shops where you can spend time. If you are taking the train from Pasadena, get off at the South Pasadena stop. Shops and restaurants are right there.
Parents who don’t want to join their teen shopping can hang at the Irish Pub on the same block.
Huntington Gardens
A visit to Pasadena isn’t complete without exploring the breathtaking Huntington Gardens. This estate features curated gardens, from the tranquil Japanese Garden to the colorful Rose Garden. Perfect for families, the Huntington offers a chance to wander through stunning landscapes, learn about plants and even enjoy interactive exhibits in the Children’s Garden. Don’t forget to stop by the Huntington Library and Art Museum to round out your visit with a touch of culture and history.

Where To Stay in Pasadena, CA
Westin Pasadena: Located close to Old Town Pasadena and City Hall. This is a great location if you want to walk all over Old Town and to the many restaurants in the area. Pick up the Pasadena Metro Gold Line in a .5 mile at Memorial Park.
Courtyard Marriott: This hotel is closer to the Rose Bowl Stadium and walkable to many restaurants in Old Town.
Hyatt Place: This hotel is Part of the Paseo Pasadena Mall and near Regal Movie Theater and Yard House. Close to Pasadena Convention Center and Ruth Chris and Flemings Steak House.
